John Parrott needed all his fighting spirit to beat Mark Davis 5-4 and reach the second round of the Players Championship in Glasgow. The 1991 world champion battled back from 4-1 down to edge through on the deciding ninth frame.
He said: "I was doing stupid things like missing balls over the pocket. My confidence went.
"I got myself together in the end and it's a good result but I need to start doing it from ball one."
Marco Fu found it much easier, coasting through with a 5-1 win over Scott MacKenzie.
The Hong Kong star made breaks of 60, 51, 67, 49, 44 and 46 and easily overcame his opponent.
Fu said: "I was nervous as there is so much at stake. I need ranking points and want to keep the season going.
"If I can get a good run here it will go some way to making up for not qualifying for the Crucible."
Gerard Greene apologised to the audience after a scrappy 5-2 win over Chris Small.
The British Open quarter-finalist made the highest break of the match, just 44, and Small's best run was only 38.
And Greene said: "It was the worst match I have ever been involved in. I feel like giving the audience their money back."
Meanwhile, Preston's Ian McCulloch defeated 1995 Crucible runner-up Nigel Bond 5-4 to reach the second round.
