Stevens promised much when he burst onto the scene but has yet to deliver on that potential.

That said he is the model of consistency at The Crucible, which seems to bring the best out of him.

Following an 18-16 final defeat to compatriot Mark Williams in 2000, having been 13-7 up, Stevens has reached successive semi-finals.

Last year he lost to Peter Ebdon 17-16, having been 16-14 up before running out of position on the last red.

The year before John Higgins put paid to his chances with a 17-15 win - once again, so near, but yet so far.

Stevens has won two major titles, the Regal Masters and Benson and Hedges Masters, both in 1999.

The tragic loss of his father and mentor hindered his progress after reaching a high of sixth in the world rankings.

And he has slipped further down the provisional rankings this year after failing to reach the last eight in any of the key tournaments.
