Doherty became the first world champion from the Republic of Ireland when he surprised Stephen Hendry to win the 1997 final 18-12. He also wrote himself into the record books by becoming the first person to lift the world amateur and professional crowns.
The Irishman turned pro in 1991 and won his first ranking event two years later when he picked up the Regal Welsh Open.
He has won five ranking tournaments in total, the last two - the Regal Welsh and Thailand Masters - coming in 2001.
This season he narrowly failed to add to that tally, falling to Mark Williams 10-9 at the UK Championship.
He has subsequently reached the quarter-finals of the Regal Welsh and the last four of the Benson and Hedges Masters.
However, his form has been inconsistent in 2003, as a first round defeat on home soil in the Irish Masters highlights.
Doherty also reached the 1998 final and his progress last year came to an end at the quarter-final stage when he lost by the odd frame in 25 to Hendry.
