By the time the 1966 World Cup finals came around, Charlton was an integral part of England manager Sir Alf Ramsey's plans.

Playing alongside his brother Jack, Bobby began the tournament with a trademark long-range goal against Mexico and scored twice to see off Portugal in the semi-finals.

Charlton was made captain for his 100th cap in April 1970 but retired from international football at the age of 32 after the 1970 World Cup, having scored a record 49 goals in 106 games.

He was knighted in 1994, is a director at Old Trafford and an ambassador for club and country.
