Sir Bobby Charlton survived the Munich air disaster in February 1958 before beginning his England career later that season.
The young Manchester United star marked his debut in a 4-0 win over Scotland by meeting Sir Tom Finney's cross to score with a superb volley.
Charlton did not play at the 1958 World Cup finals, despite making the squad, but his reputation continued to grow.
His goal to beat Argentina at the 1962 World Cup was his 25th in 37 games for England but he could not prevent the defeat by Brazil in the quarter-finals.
