The 45,000-capacity stadium was constructed in 1967 for the Mediterranean Games.
It has since been the main arena for Tunisia's international matches and home to the two big club sides, Club Africain and Esperance Sportive.
El Menzah was last renovated for the 1994 African Cup of Nations.
It has undergone minor work to improve the floodlighting for the 2004 tournament.
Away from the stadium
Tunis is one of the world's most colourful capital cities and boasts a great range of attractions for visitors.
The El Menzah stadium is located very close to the centre and is not far from the beaches, souks (markets) and beautiful mosques.
The Zitouna Mosque was built in the ninth century by the Aghlabid rulers and was also used as a higher education institution up until the early 20th century.
From the Bab el Bahr (Gate to the Sea monument) there is easy access to the large souk where visitors can try their hand at haggling with the market stall tenders.
Not far from the hustle and bustle is the classy beach resort of Gammarth, with many watersports available within a stone's throw of the hotels along the promenade.
