Fifth women's one-day international, Calcutta: India 243-4 (50 overs) beat England 205 (46.5 overs) Jain hit 15 fours in her 147-ball innings |
Karuna Jain hit her first century for India as they beat England's women by 38 runs in Calcutta (Kolkata).
She shared an opening stand of 139 with Jaya Sharma (59) and made 103 from 147 balls out of a total of 243-4.
England, who were bowled out for 50 in the previous game, made another poor start as they slumped to 26-4.
Arran Brindle (52) and Lydia Greenway (40) added 89 but they were all out for 205 in the 47th over as the home side completed a 4-1 series victory.
Playing at the famous Eden Gardens stadium, England made one change to the side beaten by 10 wickets in the fourth game as Caroline Atkins returned from illness in place of Jo Watts.
Jenny Gunn bowled tidily, sending down her 10 overs at a cost of only 23 runs, but Jain and Sharma laid the foundation for a sizeable total before Gunn caught Sharma off the bowling of Brindle.
Jain was not to be denied her hundred, only the fifth for India in women's one-day internationals, and she hit 15 fours before being run out.
Arshat Rawat (31) and Anjum Chopra (26 not out) made useful contributions to leave England facing a tough task in their bid to end the tour on a high note.
It soon looked even tougher as Jain took the catch to dismiss Charlotte Edwards for 10 off Amita Sharma and they could ill afford the run out of Rosalie Birch for four.
England again found seamer Jhulan Goswami almost impossible to get away and she was rewarded with the wicket of Claire Taylor for nine after Gun had fallen to Rumeli Dhar for a second ball duck.
It rounded off a miserable tour for Taylor, who managed only 44 runs in eight innings in the one-off Test and limited overs series.
Brindle and Greenway halted the collapse with some determined batting, with Brindle finding the boundary seven times in her eighth one-day half century.
But she was then bowled by off-spinner Varsha Raphael and when Jain stumped Greenway off Neetu David, it was left to Atkins and Beth Morgan to try and maintain England's momentum.
With 10 overs left, the tourists needed 65 to win but Morgan was run out for 22, made at a rate of a run a ball, and Atkins became Jain's second stumping victim after making 21, with Raphael (2050) again the successful bowler.
It left England on 192-8 and although Jane Smit made an unbeaten 19, the final two wickets could only muster another 13 runs before India wrapped things up.
