India have been crying out for a top-class seam bowling all-rounder since the retirement of former captain Kapil Dev almost a decade ago.
Agarkar is arguably the best of the bunch but his returns in international cricket are modest by comparison and he has not been helped by a number of injuries.
He has proved most effective in one-day cricket where he claimed 50 wickets faster than anyone before, and he is now approaching the 200 mark.
Agarkar also set an Indian record with the bat when he hit a half-century off only 21 balls against Zimbabwe in December 2000.
He took 11 wickets in three Tests on India's last tour to Australia four years ago but averages 46 with ball overall and his batting has been nothing to write home about either despite an unbeaten 109 against England at Lord's in 2002.
