Kumble's place in cricket history is assured as one of only two bowlers to take all 10 wickets in a Test innings.
He achieved the full set against Pakistan in February 1999 and now has more than 350 Test wickets in total, a total only Kapil Dev has exceeded for India.
It is often Kumble's top-spinner which proves his most potent weapon and he should be helped by the extra bounce available on Australian wickets, but only managed five wickets in three Tests on the 1999-2000 tour.
Kumble has suffered injury problems in recent years, having undergone surgery on his shoulder and jaw.
The latter was fractured by a ball from Merv Dillon during a Test in Antigua in 2002 but he demonstrated his commitment to India's cause by bowling with his face bandaged up before flying home after the game.
