After a schizophrenic period in which a succession of wicket-keepers were tried at different positions in the batting order, selectors finally plumped for a raw teenager.
Patel was only 17 when donning the gloves at Trent Bridge in 2002 in the series India drew 1-1.
He has been a Test regular since then but at some point he will have to stop making the regular errors that have dogged a number of his performances.
His batting is decent enough for a number seven or eight, but at the moment Rahul Dravid is usually preferred as keeper in one-day internationals.
Deep Dasgupta is waiting readily in the wings should Patel fail to repay the faith selectors have shown in him.
