Stockport had failed to score in each of their past two league games

Top-of-the-table Cardiff City saw their eight-match winning streak in home League One games ended as they were held to a draw by fellow promotion contenders Stockport County.

Kyle Wootton gave the visitors an early lead as he pounced on the rebound after Nathan Trott had saved Josh Dacres-Cogley's initial effort.

The game was then halted for 13 minutes as Cardiff striker Yousef Salech received treatment for a neck injury following a challenge by Brad Hills.

After Salech left the field on a stretcher with his neck in a brace, his team equalised in the seventh minute of 14 added on at the end of the first half as Joel Colwill's powerful strike took a deflection on its way in.

Cardiff had the better of a messy second half made trickier by heavy rain and a swirling wind and, despite late chances for Cian Ashford and Callum Robinson, the Bluebirds could not find a late winner.

The result ends Cardiff's impressive run of home wins but, with third-placed Bradford City losing at Huddersfield Town, the Bluebirds extend their lead over the Bantams to 10 points.

Stockport, meanwhile, remain fourth in the table, now level on points with Bradford.

Analysis: Salech concern as Cardiff's home run ends

Having triumphed 3-1 at Bradford a week earlier, this was another chance for Cardiff to strengthen their hold on an automatic promotion spot against one of the chasing pack.

With a strong wind contributing to a chaotic start, Salech had a free header saved by Ben Hinchliffe amid the frenetic back and forth between the teams.

Stockport were more clinical with their first opportunity, as Dacres-Cogley emerged with the ball from a 50-50 challenge with Ryan Wintle, dribbled towards the penalty area and, with Cardiff's defenders retreating, tried his luck with a shot.

That was pushed away by Trott, but only as far as Wootton, who tucked away the rebound.

Cardiff were dealt a more significant blow when Salech sustained what looked like a potentially serious injury, clutching his neck after falling to the ground following a challenge by Hatters centre-back Hills.

Referee Paul Howard did not award a free-kick, seemingly judging it to be a fair aerial duel, and the Bluebirds' top scorer received treatment for 13 minutes before leaving the field on a stretcher with his neck in a brace.

Cardiff composed themselves to equalise, with Ollie Tanner finding Colwill in the box and the Wales international midfielder powering in a right-footed strike with the aid of a slight deflection.

The home side remained in the ascendancy after the interval but, for all the pressure, it was not until the final five minutes that they really troubled Stockport.

Ashford had one shot blocked from close range and Robinson was thwarted by a fine, smothering save by Hinchliffe as County dug in for a valuable point against the League One leaders.
