| Wenlock Priory - site of St Milburge's shrine In medieval times, monasteries were moneyspinners - and nothing brought in the bucks better than a connection with a saint. Wenlock Priory's saint was St Milburga, or St Milburge, and her bones were supposedly discovered here in 1101. This made Wenlock Priory a top destination for pilgrims, and a shrine to St Milgurge was built in the Priory Church. This image was taken from the location of the shrine. To the left of the Priory Church south transept is the Prior's lodging, a luxurious house built at the end opf the 15th Century. When the priory was shut down in 1540 it became a private house and remains so to this day. For a better idea of how Wenlock Priory would have looked in its heyday, see our panoramic views taken inside Shrewsbury Abbey. | |
