Wenlock Priory - The Cloister The cloister was a square courtyard surrounded by a covered walkway where monks spent time in reading, prayer, reading and meditation. Close to the picture here is the lavabo, which the monks used to wash their hands before meals. Up to 16 monks could use it at once, and it was decorated with elaborately-carved panels of Wenlock marble.
The original panels have been replaced with copies to protect them from frost. The lavabo was originally covered by a free-standing octagonal building.
