BT Phonegrid will NOT be bothering you. Understood you lot?
Ruthodanort from Unst
Unst bread? Made in Unst, I expect, but how different (and why is it special)? Don't throw your back packing and moving. Hope all your household goods won't sink the ferry. All the best.

Hello, I was hoping if anyone in this forum would be able to help me find a friend of mine. I believe she lives in Unst and goes to the local school. Her name is Faye Richardson she also has a twin sister. If anyone knows them, that would be a great help. Thankyou, Beswick

Hello. I desperately want to teach in Unst. My family is from Unst (originally) and I would like to go for some years....I happened upon this page!! Pray tell....is this is a possibility for someone within the commonwealth? Of course, I have the necessary Edukashon. *wink* I would LOVE it if you had a blog about your Unst life....can you redirect? me: gillesnilsskog@gmail.com
Amelia from Canada (for now)
Where are you in Canada? The frozen and windy North? Unst sounds lovely: a few long nights, some gusts of wind, well-known cuisine (featuring guga, I presume, or puffin in a crunch: all organic). Baltasound school looks wonderful and seems to be doing very well. You have to watch out for stray Vikings when you commute to the pub(s) evenings. Incomers are welcome, provided you promise to study the local dialect promptly and assiduously. Serious birders in the neighborhood. What else have I learnt about Unst? Oh yes, wonderful bus stops (featuring drinks, computer, microwave oven [but bring your own pop corn!]). Why don't you pop over and see for yourself? Oh yes, and then there is the annual Fank on neighboring (Western) islands in case you become desperately lonely. What else? Oh yes, they shut down as soon as Radio Shetland forecasts a 50% chance of snow showers (wonderful for teachers, and somewhat different from the Maple Leaf country I suspect). Check BBC Radio Shetland and Radio Orkney: interesting news, rather exotic accents.

What do you teach?
Ruthodanort from Unst
Hello again... My mother's family is Shetlandic, but I was born and raised in my father's homeland, Norway. My mother (when I was 11) took all 5 of us to Canada. The rest is history...which segues nicely into the next wee bit of information..... I teach, History (Canadian & International) English (Canadian, which is contemporary English really) Art (useless, I know....but I love it so) Physical Education (I am the Soccer coach and do this outside of school aswell.) Additionally, I can teach geography, drama, French and social studies. I am located in Ottawa presently. I was recently on a teaching exchange to Lovely Japan and Exotic (more chaotic) Russia. Very interesting. Now I am looking for something a little more long term, perhaps indefinately. I was really hoping for The Shetlands or Orkneys.....(shetland...shetland....shetland.....) I speak French, English and Norwegian, aswell as Icelandic (Faroeaer). Hope this answers sufficiently. I have a teaching CV if someone knows someone....... And potentially, I will be one of the stray vikings wandering around. Would love the honour actually......I can start a midsummer club and have bonfires on the beach. One more thing, I am used to people calling kids Bairns and calling the beach the strand. Placenames are a hybrid between my two homelands, so its comforting acutally. many thanks
Amelia from Canada
Amelia. I wid advise you to subscribe to the Shetland Times, posts are more likely to be advertised there than nationally. Or phone the education department or our school! Contact details on the Baltasound School Website.
Ruthodanort from Unst
Many thanks.....for your advice. I shall do as suggested and must say that I appreciate the assistance. Cheers....

Far North, I hope you arrived safely, unpacked promptly, and, fortified by Unst bread and ale, are enjoying unhurried connubial bliss until school starts again (next week?). All the best, amigo. Don't delay turning your garden soil and planting those tatties and neeps, not to forget nice yellow tomatoes (makes wonderful soup).

Unst really is struggling on thje job front at present; hopefully things will turn out fine in the future though. Who'll make the Unst bread if the bakery closes? Also, have the Puffins returned to Hermaness yet? Best Wishes
Colliedogs from Berkshire
Is the bakery closing? Where did you get that info. Colliedogs?
mjc from NM,USA
Dunno for sure; I saw something in the Shetland Times a few months ago about the future of one of the shops. I think it may have been the shop with the bakery. Don't you get the Shetland Times delivered by mail order?! I get it to look for the job adverts! Can't wait to get back there.
colliedogs from Berks.
Far North, daughter received book when she returned to Somerville ten days ago, but, as I had failed to forewarn her, she just threw enclosures and the envelope (with sender's address) away. So, my apologies to you, she is not able to send you a thank you note. She is enjoying using some of the Unst recipes, even in her small College kitchen. When wife and I come to Shetland later this year, I shall trace you and would be delighted to invite you (and Consort) for a drink/bite to eat. Hope you are enjoying your new job on Shetland mainland, your new life, and hope that the garden soil is well composted, easy to turn, etc. and ... remember the yellow tomatoes [don't tell me you are not a gardener in your spare time!].
mjc from NM,USA
No, I don't get the Shet. Times, colliedogs because the postage to the States would be horrendous: I do listen to Shetland and Orkney radio, and check the local papers on line. Good luck re: job to get you back up north. Why the moniker "colliedogs"? Which parts of Shetland do you like best, and why?
mjc from NM,USA
Sorry for the delay in replying; we've just returned from a quick trip to Unst (The bread is still being made there!). RAF Saxavord is in the process of being redeveloped into a sort of business/leisure park. Hopefully a few jobs may be created, As for colliedogs; well we have two border collies!
Colliedogs from Berks
We all know there's only one breed of dog worth having. As to Far North I'm sure he's fine in the deep south.

An insight into life in Shetland in general - and on Unst, the most northerly island in UK, in particular.
