Give Me Sheep Any Day

Just returned from a wee jolly to Glasgow - courtesy of Learning & Teaching Scotland. Baltasound & Whalsay schools are piloting a project where school pupils can access the Scottish Records Office to look at censuses, birth certificates, marriages, etc. So we were away on a little course.

The hotel we were staying in was a few minutes walk from the course venue. The room I had was the size of a small house!! But Esther from Whalsay had a room with a DOUBLE JACUZZI in it - no, we did NOT share it!!!

Walking down Sauchiehall Street on Friday night and, as usually happens, we bumped into folk from Shetland. They were down at Celtic Connections courtesy of Shetland Arts Trust. We Shetlanders get everywhere. There's probably one near you as you read this. Didn't go to any of Celtic Connections but I did buy a case for my bodhran. So that's a bit musical.

But the big difference I noticed compared to life in the isles was coming in from Glasgow Airport on Thurs night. Nose to tail traffic all the way along the motorway at a virtual standstill. And people do that every day!!! I'll never compl;ain about the sheep as I drive freely through Yell again.

Far North, I sympathise entirely. Last time I was in Inverness, I could not WAIT to get out of the place again. I was so relieved to be back in the wild west.

Arnish Lighthouse from Stornoway

I sympathise also, but the Yell sheep can be a menace. At least in Glasgow between 4 & 7 you know you are going nowhere. If you are urgently trying to cross Yell to get the boat though, the sheep are likely to band together and cause you to miss the boat.

The Ringbearer from Deep in the south

Come on Far North, admit it, you discovered Glasgow's undergound on this trip! Admittedly, several million people beat you to it but it was new to you!

puffinbillyunst from Unst

How was the bar bill? I hope you didn't exceed your recommended daily amount. Good to see that public sector money isn't being wasted. As to the jacuzzi.... well......

Herman from Orkney

And does Joy know you prefer sheep?

puffinbillyunst from Unst

I really wanted to comment on the sheep fixation, but thought better of it.

Herman from Orkney

Let's have some more pictures of Unst (how about Fetlar?)! Poseidon: was he arrested for indecent exposure or did he succumb to hypothermia? Anyway, Poseidon seems be determined to get to the Orkneys, ferry or no ferry.

mjc from New Mexico, USA

Aye, thon M8 is a beesom alright, mind you it is slightly better than the A80, its just a joke. Maybe now you all understand my desperate need to get out of the place. And where I am wondering did you find a hotel with a jacuzzi....you sure it was a hotel????

GrannyE. DBE.RM from Auchenshuggle tryin tae find the light

For Herman from Orkney, my bar bill came to £4.20!!!!! Somebody give Herman the kiss of life, he's collapsed with the shock. To Granny in Auchenshuggle, the hotel was found for us. The dining room had a nice open fire in it when we came down for breakfast. MOst impressive!!

Far North from Unst

to mjc fae New Mexico - whaddya mean aboot poseidon & Orkney?? And I'll joost tak a meenit tae point oot that you must never refer tae Orkney & Shetland as the Orkneys or the Shetlands. I do this purely for your own benefit, as you widno want tae pit your foot in it!

Ruthodanort from Unst

To Ruthadonort: Orkney and Shetland, yes ma'am, so it is. My wife and I spent two days on (Shetland) Mainland and five in Orkney last May, and I wanted to go back to beguiling Stromness, but it looks as if we'll end up in Unst instead. Could be worse, I presume!! "How about May?" was the question this morning as my wife looked at the 2006 Shetland guide we received yesterday. Whaddya think? Would 4/5 days in Unst enough to make natives out of us? Kidding. I tried to get our daughter, an undergraduate at Somerville College down south, to scout Unst (parental subsidies were dangled in front of her, the charms of landing in Sumbaugh were touted) but she claims that her (mostly English and Welsh, I fear) classmates were warning her that you would not have defrosted/woken up so early in the year as the end of March/April!! [She'll be going to Finland, instead: what do you know!!] Would it be convenient to visit Fetlar while based in Unst? or should one really be based there to do it justice? MJC from NM

mjc from NewMexico, USA

£4.20? A minute? Did they mischarge. I would also like to state that certain hotels in Orkney have real fires and provide taxi service. They charge a much higher bar premium though.

Herman from Orkney

to mjc. As an orcadian now living in Unst, I'd recommend both. They're very different and both well worth the visit. Not too sure if there's a lot happening in May here, but the nights will be long by then, so there's plenty time to wander our beautiful coastline. Yes, you can visit Fetlar fae here, the ferries are fine for that. Yell too is a stone's throw, but loyalty to Unst prevents me from recommending it! We usually get fine weather in May, but not very warm. I wouldn't worry about being defrosted tho. You can tell your daughter that she dusno ken whit she's missin! (And that comin up for our 2 Up Helly Aa's wid be right up her & her student palls street!)

Ruthodnanort from Unst

You wouldn't be encouraging excessive drinking by students would you Ruth?

Herman from Orkney

Who said anythin aboot drinkin??? And wha telt dee my neem?

Ruthodanort from Unst

Ruth of the North, Bessie from Stromness ....

mjc from NM, USA

Sorry for causing offence. Its easier to type Ruth than to type the more pretentious Ruthodanort. Some of us can't spend all day building up our typing speeds on da pewter. So you aren't a Ruth then? Shame its a nice name.

Herman from Orkney

Greatly enjoyed meeting you on the 7th and hoped to see you aboard last Sunday on way back to Lerwick, but didn't. You missed out on a pretty nasty trip. It would be good to know that you are well.

Rabmastiff from Shetland
