It Wisnae Joy's Bidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those that know me I got a haircut on Friday - and rather more was taken off than I intended!!! Unst bloggers will know that my hair tends to be rather on the long side - but not just now. Joy was most upset and traumatised by it all. I did offer to wear a bag over my head until it grew back. Joy also wants everyone to know that my getting a haircut was absolutely nothing whatever to do with her - nor was my wearing a suit on Saturday and Monday!!

Anyway that disclaimer over, the past few days have been hectic. Thursday night was a panto rehearsal and then I had a 2 and a half journey and 2 ferries to get to Joy's house as I had a meeting in Lerwick the next day. Got to Spiggie at 10.45pm. Rather tired.

The next day, after a 2 hour wait at the dentist's for an 'emergency' appointment, it was to the Garrison Theatre in Lerwick to help set up for the Shetland Schools' Film Festival on Sat. At night, we went to the Spiggie Hotel for an 'American' evening. Huge menu with lots of tasters - cocktails, burgers, succotash, jambalaya, mom's apple pie, pecan pie, Texas caviar, Southern fried chicken, corn bread, chowder, etc, etc. Absolutely stuffed we were. Definite need for loosening one's belt afterwards. It's a small hotel but very nice.

The Film Festival happened on Sat afternoon. This is the 1st event of its kind and involved pupils from schools in Baltasound, Whalsay, Whiteness, Brae, Ollaberry, North Roe, Scalloway, Nesting. The pupils used digital video or stop-frame animation. We were treated to Superhero rabbits, talking pigs, zombies, Shetland's version of Balamory. Each school was presented with a certificate and a Tammie (our equivalent of an Oscar or a Bafta - named after the Tammie Norie, the Shetland name for a puffin). I spent the afternoon in a box providing voice-overs and controlling the lighting. Good fun though. Went off without a hitch.

Monday was another big day. Had a job interview at a school on the Shetland mainland and got the job. So, there'll come a time when I won't be island blogging as Far North but as Far Sooth!! (That's why Herman congratulated me).

Anyway, we're having snow showers today, so here's hoping that we'll waken up tomorrow and have a day off!! Pupils and teachers at the Tammies event in Lerwick

We have the day off (Thursday) - but its inservice. Congrats again. Putting a bag over your head seems a bit extreme. But whatever you fancy....

Herman from Orkney

Congratulations! I am sure Unst will miss you. When do you move down? Herman will have to start calling you ruthodasooth (or some such). What, for pity's sake, is Texas caviar?! As a New Mexican, I am just wondering that those Texans are up to. They are not passing catfish roe as Uncle Sam's caviar, are they?!

mjc from NM,USA

Joan says the doo taks years aff dee.

Ruthodanort from Unst

you wish!!

damadcoo from Unst

Did Spiggie Hotel's American buffet include Texas Oysters?

mjc from NM,USA

Got tomorrow off as well, (but its inservice). Half inch of snow here. I remember 4 days off one February. Anyway most of Unst won't want snow this weekend.

Herman from Orkney

We have 2 days off after the weekend, at least all who did the night's team building event last year have 2 days off, those that chickened oot o the teepee experience still have to do their in service. And I should say Experience with a capital 'E'.

Ruthodanort from Unst

teepee? the real mccoy?

mjc from NM,USA

I didn't chicken out from the teepee experience - I just had a better offer that evening in Lerwick!! From small acorns....

Far North from Unst

If a nylon sheet in a 'cone shape' is the real mccoy then yup. Tho I have to admit I wis expectin somethin more substantial when I signed up to it. Like buffalo skins etc, with big sticks pokin oot o the top. I should probably mention that the 'cone shape' became decidedly 2-D in the middle o the night.

Ruthodanort from Unst

Apologies. Sorry folks for a mix up. I had thought that, for some weird reason, Far North and Ruthodanort were the same. Hence some comments here and there which cannot be understood otherwise. I guess the only thing they have in common is that Unst is lucky to have them both as current residents.

mjc from NM

I heard that the teepee was the Force 9 experience. Who has the small acorn? I never saw an Oak tree on Unst. Anyway we have 1 day off after the weekend & its not inservice.

Herman from Orkney

How I could have been so confused as to think Ruthodanort and Far North are one and the same is beyond understanding. For my punishment, maybe I should move to Texas.... Some snide references I made elsewhere (Ruthodanort's blog re: Poseidon) could only be understood when the confusion is taken into consideration. I bet Herman was puzzled though he bravely put forth a rejoinder. Have a great weekend you all.

mjc from NM,USA

I always expect confusion whem dealing with Ruthodanort. Nothing is ever straightforward with her (or is it him?) as we don't know their identity for certain. As to Far North - don't even try to understand that one.

Herman from Orkney

Now I'm confused. Who am I?? Maybe I'm really Herman?? Tho last night at UHA I wis Skilite, a hippy in chase o an Unst man........ Skitso or what??

Ruthodanort from Unst

Right!! Now I know why no one offered to put (blog) name to face on the EvilTwinny posting. What a zoo! (THAT should get some response!). Pity the outsider who tries to learn the secret signs and handshakes!! Hope you all had/have a wonderful Valentine's Day in the Shetlands (ooops! Shetland Islands) and the Orkney Islands, not to mention the unfortunates living in the western isles.

mjc from NM

Why are those in the Western Isles unfortunate? I'm confused by Ruthodanort - which Unst man were you pursuing? As to skitso - well nae comment.

Herman from Orkney

Of course, those in the beautiful western isles are not unfortunate. Au contraire. Just meant to get a rise out of those reading the blog. FYI, Ruthodonort was chasing the Viking with the big black beard receiving (what she erroneously believed to be) a cheque/check (last photo, I think). Nothing changes in this world ...

mjc from NM,USA

Ruthodanort would love cheques for her photos. Ah, I dream of second placings!

Herman from Orkney

Du was lookin in da wrong pairt o Unst Ruth. But du lookit bonnie i da Times

Claudias from Unst

Claudias - which part o Unst is worthy o a look den?? Will it be up Nort this next weekend I wonder??

Ruthodanort from Unst

Du wid be welcome, but I doot I'm too old fer dee joy.

Claudias from Unst

Ruthodanort - I'm feared to guess where the game of Unst Hide & Seek is going. Is it one of the famous mystery tours? How can there be someone in Unst you don't ken?

Herman from Orkney

(R.)How can there be someone in Unst you don't ken? Herman from Orkney If I, mjc, were to try and find someone in Unst, I would go to a soothsayer (not a soothmoother!)!!

mjc from NM,USA
