Is That a Longship Or Are You Just Pleased to See Me?

Beautiful day in Unst today, with some snow on the ground. Perfect day for the Uyeasound Up-Helly-Aa. Guess it must be Norwick's turn to have the bad weather. Terry Priest's Guizer Jarl's squad came to the school with their galley, Leirkvi. Always sends the kids high. The galley was pulled into the school playground. Everybody then gathered in the school hall to sing the Up-Helly-Aa song and the Norseman's Home. A photograph of the whole school with the Jarl's Squad was taken. Eventually this photo will be added to the others displayed around the hall.

Sunny from Arran's bringing a Viking longship to Calumannabel's Dating Extravaganza in Lewis. Hope her sailor friends are as braw as yours.

What, or who, is in this year's bill? Nice pictures Far North. Almost worth me forgiving your hovel comments. Never mind, when you are stranded in a dark, cold, windy Hatston in 2 weeks time I will have my revenge! Of course, I'd come and pick up your consort.

Herman from Orkney

Is that the away strip? And remember always pillage first.

calumannabel from The cafeteria, Kishmull's Galley, Monaco

Where did you get your kit? I made our cossies out of off cuts from the ARCAS shop. Great photos, a bit better behaved looking than our Uphellia but I presume these were taken earlier in the day.

Sunny from Arran

Nice outfits (and thanks for sharing the pictures) My wife was particularly impressed by the black beards. I assume they are real ... [being clean shaven myself, I told my wife they were fake doubtless, straight from the shelves of Hobby Lobby or some such] But I thought the Norsks were supposed to have blond hair?

mjc from NM,USA

Nice photos far north. Nothing beats big bearded hairy vikings. Do you still get date sandwiches at the uyea up helly aa?

Da hairy tottie. from Aberdeenshire

beards are real. A couple o years ago the jarl squad did their best to go blond, but didn't quite get the scandanavian effect. Certainly memorable tho.

Ruthodanort from Unst

I remember the blond beards. Didn't look too bad, but definitely not marauding eighth century viking standard.

Herman from Orkney

I was there plus wife visiting your fiddler 'Spencie' He had never watched before, always being in a squad. We all enjoyed the evening spectacle, and he made some good tattie soup.

Trevor Scantlebury from Quarff

What is the Up-Helly-Aa all about?
