Templeton – the old factory

In 1946, Robert Biggin started his working life in Templeton's carpet factory in Glasgow as a creative colourist.

Robert Biggin

"Templeton Street had a disadvantage in that it was a five floored factory. Therefore mechanisation in the factory wasn't very practical because the forklift trucks and boom trucks, which are currently used just now for moving carpets around, were obviously not practical in a factory which has different levels. ...It wasn't until we finally moved out of Templeton Street and the other factories into a purpose built factory in Crown Street that mechanisation became a possibility. In fact, that was a very modern factory where you could get two forklift trucks going in opposite directions and able to miss one another as well!"
