Changing patterns of employment since 1945. This site has been designed to cater for students at Intermediate level. The site complements two television programmes covering the same curriculum match, but is designed so that it can also be used as a stand-alone resource. Site remitThis site reflects the continuing decline of the heavy industries after 1945 and changing employment patterns in Scotland during the period, by highlighting what was happening in four key industries: shipbuilding; carpets; cars; oil. The site is also to a large extent source-based and is designed to encourage students to develop their source-handling abilities by presenting the case studies of each industry in the form of primary and secondary sources, and through easy-to-use activities. Learning OutcomesWhile the site does not aim to cover all of the outcomes for the unit it aims to meet the following learning objectives: - demonstrate knowledge and understanding of historical developments and events;
- explain historical developments and events;
- evaluate historical sources;
- evaluate historical sources with reference to their historical context.
Curriculum matchChanging patterns of employment: the continued decline of the heavy industries; North Sea Oil; assessment of the effects of changing employment patterns. The site features quiz questions on the content of each case study and exemplars of exam style questions, appropriate for both Intermediate I and Intermediate 2 students. Site structureThe main body of the site comprises four sections, or case studies, relating four important industries in Scotland since 1945: - Shipbuilding

The story is revealed through primary and secondary sources. Each industry is placed in its own historical context. Workers' experiences feature in all four. In addition, the site focuses on how the industries have inspired artistic and cultural expression in Scotland and highlights special moments which capture the essence of the period. Students are provided with a range of evidence on the effects of changing employment patterns in each of these industries. Treasure Chests hold additional source material that can be used by students and/or teachers to complement the original extracts in the main site. Learning experiences The following learning experiences are essential to the Intermediate course. This site encourages candidates to: - interpret and evaluate historical source material;
- record systematically information derived from a variety of sources, such as notes and visual materials;
- make use of relevant historical terms and concepts take part in formal and informal discussion and debate based on and informed by historical evidence and knowledge, in order to develop the ability to think independently and make informed judgements;
- develop the skills of producing written (or oral) responses for a variety of purposes
Intermediate 1 and 2 candidates have been provided with sufficient primary and secondary source material to investigate the history each of these industries since 1945 and either take part in discussion or debate, and/or produce a written (or oral) report. Intermediate 2 candidates have been provided with sufficient material in each of the case studies to produce an Extended Response on any or all of these industries using a wide range of source material.
