Cumberland is a sausage dog who until recently has been cosseted, spoilt and generally fawned over by Granny Frannie. As a result of a rich diet and years of lazing around, he's developed various ailments which mean regular visits to the vet and embarrassing 'wind emissions'.

Cumberland is distraught when Granny Frannie dies and he's left in the 'uncouth' hands of grandson Colin, who not only has to tighten the purse strings but is the complete opposite of Cumberland.

Snobby Cumberland is not necessarily all he appears though: there is a rumour that he was in fact found by Granny Frannie in a litter of puppies in a rough part of town.

Cumberland needs Colin as breadwinner to keep him in the manner to which he has been accustomed. It's that or the DOGS' HOME! Conversely, Colin needs Cumberland to help him speak Gaelic so he can keep his job and Granny's house.

Cumberland has another dark secret - he is responsible for the serial disappearance of cats in the neighbourhood. Where they go - nobody knows. However, he does have a cellar deep beneath his kennel ...
