Dan Cruickshank is the globe-trotting architectural historian best known from his dynamic television appearances in series such as Adventures in Architecture and Britain's Best Buildings.
In this wide-ranging talk he examines our attitudes to the restoration, repair and recreation of lost historic buildings.
Dan has served on the Architectural Panel of the National Trust and he argues that we underestimate the aesthetic and emotional consequences of such conservation - we must understand the history of the people and places around us if we want to understand the present.
This event will be broadcast in Radio 3's Night Waves on Monday 4th January 2010 at 9.15pm.
