Germ Attack!

Germ Attack!

Read by Robert Blythe from the BBC Radio Drama Company.

"Neuron C2 to Brain cell X, immediately please!" I quickly buzzed along the connection wire to Brain cell X, I was needed. Suddenly, I burst through the brain tissue. "To nerve chain P4 'move left hand towards head'" That was the message. Once again I buzzed off down the wire towards nerve chain P4. I passed the message on. It rippled down the chain.

I wished I was a Bacterium. I wanted a promotion. Only the best Neurons got promoted, and as far as I was concerned I was an amateur. "GERM ALERT! GERM ALERT! GERMS ARE ENTERING THE BODY!" That was it! My big chance! I could kill a germ and be promoted! "ALL WHITE BLOOD CELLS REPORT TO STOMACH DEP Q5!"

Oh well! It looked like my chance had been taken, by an army of white blood cells, ready to kill any germ lurking in the stomach. I carried on with my job, whizzing along my wires. A few minutes later another message came through the loud-speaker, "WHITE BLOOD CELLS HAVE BEEN DEFEATED, ALL BACTERIA TO STOMACH DEP Q5!"

The Bacteria were the best in battle in the human body. They had never lost a single fight. I wished I was one. Then a few minutes later another message was announced, not the type we were hoping for though. "BACTERIA HAVE BEEN DEFEATED, GERMS ARE NOW ENTERING THE BRAIN!" Everyone was going to shelter in the imagination depot.

Not I! I was going to kill a germ! The ground floor of the brain was swarming with them, destroying everything in their path. I zipped down to ground level. Then I realised something. Neurons can't kill germs. The germs were all looking at me. Ready to kill. I kept thinking 'What can I do? What can I do?' Then I remembered something. I may not be able to kill a germ, I knew someone who could...

"RELEASE THE SUPER HORMONES!" I shouted opening the hatch. The super hormones immediately fired themselves out like arrows. They were a grade higher than the Bacteria, but only used in emergencies. I don't think I'd ever seen them be used before. They popped the germs like bubbles, big green germy bubbles. Soon there were none left.

The super hormones all rushed back into their hatch. Everything was normal, except it was all very quiet. An extremely old Bacterium came out of the imagination depot. He pointed at me "It was him! I saw him! That young neuron!" he said. All of the cells and Bacteria and nerves came out and stared. "He released the super hormones! He saved our lives!"

There was a deadly pause. Then they all erupted into a cheer. They ran down to the ground floor and lifted me up in the air, cheering. You will be glad to here, I was promoted to chief Bacterium and a statue of me was unveiled in central brain, for everyone to see. It just proves whatever you want to be, be it.
