Maher, 25, who has been riding 10-year-old bay Rolette for the last 10 months, said she was a "fantastic horse" going from strength to strength.

"She has an unbelievable amount of ability and trust," he said.

Rolette is stabled at his family's stud farm in Elsenham, Essex.

He is looking forward to the show-jumping, which is being held in Hong Kong, but said he was still getting to grips with being selected for Team GB.

"I don't think it's quite sunk in yet to he honest.

"Although I was pushing for it, maybe it is a little bit early in my career but I managed to get everything right for the right time," he said.
