Nethercott, who was born in Newmarket but now lives in Harlow, Essex, went to school at Mark Hall Comprehensive and then Broxbourne School. He joined Oxford University Boat Club as a student and was the Oxford women's Blue Boat cox in 2000 before coxing Isis in 2002 and then moving up to the winning Blue Boat in 2003.
