ਕੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਸੁਣਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਣਾਉਣਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ ਹਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ। ਤੇ ਅੱਜ ਆਪਾਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂਗੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਈਏ।

Yeah! But only the ones that have happy endings! 

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹੋ? ਕੁਝ ਲੋਕ ਪਹਾੜ mountain  ਉੱਤੇ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਉਥੇ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ bear ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ guide ਨੇ ਉਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਕਿਹਾ?

We were walking up the mountain, when we saw a bear. Luckily, before we started walking, our guide had given us instructions. We followed her instructions. We looked at the bear and walked away slowly. As we were walking, the bear left and went into the woods.

ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਰਿੱਛ ਦਰਖਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ। ਚਲੋ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੱਗੇ ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ। ਉਹ ਪਹਾੜ ਵੱਲ ਤੁਰੇ ਜਾਂ ਫ਼ਿਰ ਰਿੱਛ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਣ ਲੱਗੇ? 

We were walking up the mountain, when we saw a bear.

The speaker walking was the action in progress. It was in progress when they saw the bear. They use the past continuous tense. 

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
ਅਸੀਂ past continuous ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਕ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲੱਗਿਆਂ ‘was ਜਾਂ were’ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ verb ਦੇ ING ਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਇਹ ਕਾਲ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਕ ਕੰਮ ਦੇ ਚਲਦੇ ਚਲਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਰ ਕੀ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।  ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਰਿੱਛ ਦੇਖਿਆ, ‘we saw a bear’। ਇਸ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ past simple, ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ 'saw' ਅਤੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਵੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਆਲੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਦੇ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।

Let’s practice some past continuous. We don’t usually stress was or were. Repeat after me:

were
were walking
We were walking.

looking
was looking

I was looking at him.

ਕਹਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਅਗਲਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਭਲਾਂ ਗਾਈਡ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਦੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਫ਼ਿਰ ਉਹ ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। 

Luckily before we started walking, our guide had given us instructions.

So, first, the guide gave the group instructions. Next, they started walking. The speaker says the guide ‘had given us instructions’. This sentence uses the past perfect tense. 

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
ਇਹ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ ਕਿ ਬੀਤੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਘਟਨਾ ਤੋਂਬਾਅਦ ਦੂਸਰੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਹੋਈpast perfect  ਕਾਲ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Notice that the speaker used the adverb ‘before’ to show what happened first. They said ‘before we started walking, our guide had given us instructions’. Had given is the past perfect tense. 

Let’s practise the pronunciation together. ‘Had’ is not usually stressed when we use the past perfect tense. So, repeat after me.

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
ਚਲੋ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ tenses ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋ। ਟੌਮ ਵੀ ਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਦਾ ਜੁਆਬ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਕਹੋ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ  ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਰਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ 'envelope' ਮਿਲਿਆ।

I was walking to work and I found an envelope on the floor.

ਹੁਣ ਕਹੋ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਸੇ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਸਨ। ਦੂਸਰੇ ਵਾਕ ਨੂੰ past perfect ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ‘had’ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨਾ।

I opened the envelope and someone had put money in it.

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤਾ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੱਗੇ ਕੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
