नको सॅम,मी आत्ता आराम करत नाहीये. थोडं काम आहे.

Sam
Oh. Yes, yes, I knew that.

हे चौघेजण काय बोलतायत ऐका. निवांत होण्यासाठी ते काय काय करतात ते सांगतायत.

1.  I do yoga to relax.  
2.  I find reading relaxing.
3.  Listening to music helps me switch off.
4.  Exercise takes my mind off things.

त्यातले एकजण योगासने करतो तर दुसरी 'exercise' म्हणजे व्यायाम करते. आणखी एकाने सांगितलं की तो 'reading' वाचन करतो तर दुसरा म्हणाला तो 'music' म्हणजे संगीत ऐकतो. या वाक्यांमध्ये yoga कसं वापरलेलं ऐकलंत का? आता त्यांनी हे कसं सांगितलं ते बघू. चला ही वाक्य पुन्हा ऐकू.

I do yoga to relax.

'Yoga' च्या आधी 'do' येत .म्हणजे करणे, वाक्याची सुरुवात 'I' ने होते आणि त्यानंतर क्रियापद येतं.

He said 'do yoga', but you could also say 'read a book', 'listen to music', 'eat chocolate…'

Tejali
आणि त्यानंतर तुम्ही हेतू स्पष्ट करत जो आहे 'to relax'.

Sam
We use a 'to' verb to give the reason we do an activity. For example, you're listening to this lesson 'to improve your English'.

Let's practise. Please repeat after me:

I eat chocolate to relax.

Great!  आता दुसऱ्या व्यक्तीने काय म्हटलं ते पुन्हा ऐकू. 'reading' वाक्याच्या मध्ये येईल.  वाक्य कसं सुरू केलाय आणि संपवलंय त्याकडे लक्ष द्या.

I find reading relaxing.

OK, 'I find' ने वाक्याची सुरुवात झाली, त्यानंतर काय करतोय ते सांगितलं 'reading'  आणि कशासाठी तेही सांगितलं 'relaxing'.

Sam
And the activity can be an '-ing' word – this is called a gerund – like 'reading' or a noun. For example, 'I find books relaxing'. Let's practise:

I find reading relaxing.

Thanks, Sam. आता तिसऱ्या आणि चौथ्या व्यक्तीने काय सांगितलं? त्यांनी वेगळे शब्द वापरलेत. पण आत्ता वाक्याच्या सुरूवातीकडेच लक्ष द्या.

Listening to music helps me switch off.

Exercise takes my mind off things.

लक्षात आलं? जसं सॅम म्हणतीये activity एक तर नाम असू शकतं जसं की  'exercise', किंवा धातुसाधित नाम असू शकत जसं की 'listening to        music'. वाक्याची सुरुवात कशानेही होऊ शकते.

Absolutely. They are the subject of the sentence.

त्यानंतर येतात शब्दप्रयोग. पहिला 'helps me switch off' आणि 'To switch off'

Sam
Yes, they are. And be careful of the verbs 'help' and 'take' – they need an 's' at the end if the activity is the subject of the sentence. Let's practise that:

Listening to music helps me switch off.

Exercise takes my mind off things.
