आजच्या भागात आपण .... तुम्हीच ओळखा आपण काय करणार आहोत ते. ही तीन वाक्यं ऐका आणि ते लोक कशाबद्दल सांगतायत ते समजून घ्या. ऐका.

1. I started primary school when I was 6.
2. I left high school when I was 18 to go to university.
3. I graduated from Manchester University and I got a degree in engineering.
4. I left secondary school when I was 16 and I went to college, where I got a certificate in business.

Yes, they used lots of different ways to talk about education. So let’s have a closer look!

आधी कशाला काय म्हणतात ते समजून घेऊ. ‘Primary school म्हणजे प्राथमिक शाळा, ‘secondary school’ म्हणजे माध्यमिक शाळा, ‘high school’ म्हणजे उच्च माध्यमिक शाळा. ‘college’ म्हणजे महाविद्यालय आणि ‘university’ म्हणजे विश्वविद्यालय.

And what verbs did they use with these places? Let’s listen again – the verbs will come before the schools.

I started primary school when I was 6.
I left secondary school when I was 16 and I went to college.

आपण काय काय ऐकलं? आपण ऐकलं ‘started’, म्हणजे सुरूवात झाली. ‘left’, म्हणजे सोडलं. इथे एक लक्षात घ्या, left हा leave चा भूतकाळ आहे. ‘Went to’, म्हणजे गेले होते. Went, goचा भूतकाळ आहे.

And these verbs are all in the past simple. Shall we practise the pronunciation? Please repeat after me:

I started primary school when I was 6.

I left secondary school when I was 16…

…and I went to college.

आणि ‘went’ नंतर ‘to’ वापरलेलं लक्षात आलं का? पण एक लक्षात ठेवा की school च्या आधी ‘the’ वापरत नाहीत. पुन्हा ऐकू. Qualification बद्दल कुठले शब्द वापरलेत बघा. कुठलं क्रियापद दोन वेळा ऐकू येतंय. नीट लक्ष द्या. 

I graduated from Manchester University.

I got a degree in engineering.

I got a certificate in business.

Did you hear it? The verb they used twice was ‘got’.

बरोबर. ‘Got a degree in engineering’ म्हणजे इंजिनीअरींगची पदवी मिळवली. ‘Got a certificate in business’ म्हणजे व्यापार विषयात प्रमाणपत्र मिळवले. कुठल्या विषयातपदवी घेतली हे सांगण्यासाठी ‘a degree’ आणि ‘a certificate’, यानंतर ‘in’ वापरतात. आपण आणखी एक शब्द वापरला ‘graduated’, म्हणजे शैक्षणिक अभ्यासक्रम पूर्ण करणे.

And after ‘graduated’, it’s important to remember to use ‘from’ before the name of the place. Let’s practise saying these altogether. Repeat after me:

I got a degree in engineering.

I got a certificate in business.

I graduated from Manchester University.

Great! त्यांच्या वयाबद्दल कसं सांगितलं ऐकू या आता. 

I started primary school when I was 6.

I left high school when I was 18.

I left secondary school when I was 16.

OK, तुमच्या शिक्षणाबद्दल कसं बोलायचं ते समजलंय तुम्हाला. आता तुम्हाला सराव करायचा आहे. तुम्ही शाळेत जायला लागलात तेव्हा आणि शाळा सोडली तेव्हा, तुमचं वय किती होतं? हे सांगायचंय. कसं सांगाल? यासाठी तुम्हाला ‘started’, ‘left’ हे शब्द वापरायचे आहेत. विचार करून उत्तर द्या आणि नंतर सॅमचं उत्तरही ऐका.

आता सांगा, you got ‘a certificate in’ something. तुम्हाला  हवा तो विषय निवडा. इथे कुठलं क्रियापद वापराल? विचार करा आणि नंतर सॅमचं उत्तरही ऐका.
