મિત્રો, આજે અમે ચર્ચા કરીશું કે તમે નમ્રતાપૂર્વક માહિતી કઈ રીતે પૂછશો. ચર્ચાને આગળ વધારીએ એ પહેલાં તમે ઍડમને સાંભળો, જે ત્રણ અલગ-અલગ વ્યક્તિઓ પાસેથી માહિતી પૂછી રહ્યો છે. સાંભળો અને નક્કી કરો કે શું ઍડમ ત્રણેય વ્યક્તિઓને ઓળખે છે કે નહીં. અઘરું લાગતું હોય તો ડોન્ટ વરી, અમે તમને શીખવામાં મદદ કરીશું. તમારા મદદ માટે એક શબ્દ છે ‘the nearest supermarket’ એટલે નજીકની સુપરમાર્કેટ.

Excuse me! Where’s the nearest supermarket, please?

Woman 1
Oh, yes. Turn down here on the left, then…

Adam
Hello! Sorry to bother you. Do you know where the nearest supermarket is, please?

Man
Yes, I do. Go straight down here, then… 

Adam
Hi there. Can you tell me where the nearest supermarket is, please?

Woman 2
Yes, of course I can. It’s just down here on the…

પ્રેઝન્ટર
તો મિત્રો, તમારો શો વિચાર છે? સેમ, શું તમને લાગે છે કે ઍડમ જેની સાથે વાત કરે છે, તેણે ઓળખે છે?

Sam
No, I think he was talking to strangers, people he didn’t know. So he was being very polite.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
હા, એ ‘polite’ એટલે બહુ વિન્રમ રીતે વાત કરે છે. Sam, what words and phrases did Adam use to ask people politely?

Sam
Well, he used ‘please’ a lot! And also ‘excuse me’ and ‘sorry to bother you’ in a polite voice or intonation.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
હા, વિન્રમ રીતે લોકોનું ધ્યાન ખેંચવા માટે ઍડમ ત્રણ શબ્દસમૂહનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે. બરાબરને સેમ?

Sam
Absolutely! And then he asked for the same thing, but in three different ways.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
ચાલો, ફરીથી પ્રથમ પ્રશ્ન સાંભળીએ. ઍડમ કઈ રીતે પ્રશ્ન પૂછે છે?

‘Where’s the nearest supermarket, please?’

પ્રેઝન્ટર
તે પ્રશ્નની શરૂઆત ‘Where’s’….., થી કરે છે. આ શબ્દ અંગ્રેજી શબ્દો ‘where’ અને ‘is’ થી બન્યો છે. ‘Where’s’…. કહ્યાં બાદ ઍડમ જેના વિશે માહિતી જોઈએ છે, તે વિષય જણાવે છે. તમે ‘where’… ની જગ્યાએ બીજા શબ્દનો પણ ઉપયોગ કરી શકો છો.

Yeah, you can say ‘What’s the nearest supermarket?’ or ‘Which is the nearest supermarket?’Shall we practise the pronunciation? Repeat after me:

‘Where’s the nearest supermarket, please?’

‘What’s the nearest supermarket, please?’

‘Which is the nearest supermarket, please?’

Thank you, Sam! હવે, ઍડમનો પ્રશ્ન નમ્ર હતો, પરંતુ સીધો. અંગ્રેજીમાં પરોક્ષ પ્રશ્નો પણ હોય છે. ચાલો ઍડમને ફરીથી સાંભળો અને જાણો કે તે પ્રશ્નની શરૂઆત તે કઈ રીતે કરે છે. પ્રશ્નનો બીજો ભાગ સરખો છે, પરતું શરૂઆત કંઈક અલગ છે.

‘Do you know where the nearest supermarket is, please?’

‘Can you tell me where the nearest supermarket is, please?’

પ્રેઝન્ટર
Ok, તો પ્રથમ પ્રશ્નની શરૂઆત થાય છે ‘Do you know where….?’ ગુજરાતીમાં ‘Do you know where….?’ નો અર્થ થાય છે ‘શું તમને ખબર છે........કે ક્યાં આવેલું છે?’

And the second question started with ‘Can you tell me where…?’

પ્રેઝન્ટર
પ્રશ્ન છે ‘શું તમે મને કહી શકો કે.......ક્યાં છે?’ બન્ને પ્રશ્નોનો અંત ઍડમ કઈ રીતે કરે છે? ઉચ્ચારણનો અભ્યાસ કરતી વખતે તમે સેમને સાંભળો અને ક્રિયાપદ ‘is’ નો ઉપયોગ ક્યાં કરવામાં આવ્યું છે તેના ઉપર ધ્યાન આપો.

Ready? Repeat after me:

‘Do you know where the nearest supermarket is, please?’

‘Can you tell me where the nearest supermarket is, please?’

મિત્રો, શું તમે નોધ્યું? પરોક્ષ પ્રશ્નોમાં ક્રિયાપદ ‘is’ જે વસ્તુ પૂછી રહ્યાં છો એના પછી આવશે. હવે સમય થયો છે અભ્યાસ કરવાનો. તમને જાણવું છે કે ટૉઇલેટ ક્યાં છે. તમે અજાણ્યા વ્યક્તિને પૂછો. પ્રશ્નની શરૂઆત ‘where’ થી કરો. અને ‘please’ કહેવાનું ભૂલતાં નહીં. તમારો જવાબ સેમના જવાબ સાથે સરખાવો.

Great! હવે ફરીથી ‘toilet’ વિશે પૂછો પણ આ વખતે અંગ્રેજી શબ્દ ‘is’ એ ‘the toilet’ પછી આવશે. સેમ તમને જવાબ જણાવે એ પહેલાં તમારી પાસે વિચારવાનો સમય હશે.

Good! તમે એમ પણ કહી શકો ‘Can you tell me where the toilet is, please?’ મિત્રો, વિન્રમ રીતે માહિતી કઈ રીતે પૂછવું તે વિશે આજે તમે જાણ્યું!
