આજે આપણે વાત કરીશું કે તમે  મિત્રોને કેવી રીતે સલાહ આપશો. અંગ્રેજીમાં કહીએ તો ‘give advice’. સૌથી પહેલાં તમે સાંભળો વિવિધ લોકોને જે અંગ્રેજી શીખવા બાબતે સલાહ આપી રહ્યા છે. જો અઘરું લાગે તો ડોન્ટ વરી!અમે તમને શીખવામાં મદદ કરીશું. તમે નીચેના સૂચનો સાંભળો અને નક્કી કરો કે સૌથી સારી સલાહ કઈ છે. તમારી મદદ માટે એક શબ્દ છે ‘diary’.  મિત્રો, ગુજરાતીમાં ‘diary’ ને ડાયરી જ કહીશું.

અહીં ઘણા મહત્વની સલાહ આપવામાં આવી છે. તમારા મતે સૌથી મહત્વનું સૂચન ક્યું છે મિત્રો? તો શોન, આપણે સલાહ આપવા માટે ઉપયોગી ભાષા વિશે વાત શરૂ કરીએ?

Yes! The first speaker used the verb ‘should’. This is very common for g iving advice. 

પ્રેઝન્ટર
હા, શું તમે સાંભળ્યું કે ‘should’ પછી ક્યો શબ્દ હતો? શું એ માત્ર ક્રિયાપદ છે કે પછી ‘to’ સાથેનું ક્રિયાપદ?

You should write a diary in English.

Yes, they used the verb ‘write’ without ‘to’. So after ‘should’ you just need the verb, no ‘to’. 

પ્રેઝન્ટર
તો મિત્રો, અંગ્રેજીમાં ‘should’ સાથે ‘to’ નો ઉપયોગ કરવું નહીં.

OK, great! So now let's look at another way to give advice – we also heard 'how about..?'

સરસ, અને‘How about’ પછી ક્યો શબ્દ આવે છે? મિત્રો, શું તમે એની નોંધ લીધી?

How about watching films in English?

So, they used the verb ‘watching'. So after ‘how about’ you need the verb with 'ing'. 

પ્રેઝન્ટર
તમે બરાબર બોલ્યાં શોન. મિત્રો, તમે ક્રિયાપદ સાથે –ing નો ઉપયોગ કરો અને ઉચ્ચારણ ઉપર ધ્યાન આપો. તમારે ‘intonation’ એટલે કે અવાજ લંબાવીને બોલવું પડશે.

Great – we have one more way to give advice, don't we? 

Sian
That's right – 'have to'. But this is much stronger. 

પ્રેઝન્ટર
તો મિત્રો, જ્યારે તમે ઈચ્છો છો કે સામેની વ્યક્તિ કંઈક કરે તો અંગ્રેજીમાં 'have to' નો ઉપયોગ કરો. સાંભળો અને અભ્યાસ કરો. 

પ્રેઝન્ટર
તો 'have to' પછી (infinitive) verb આવે છે. Shall we look at the pronunciation quickly?

Yes, so 'have' and 'to' together are pronounced /hafta/. Repeat after me: ‘hafta’. 

‘You hafta visit.’ 

પ્રેઝન્ટર
Thank you, Sian. તો તમે જાણ્યું કે સલાહ કેવી રીતે આપવી અને હવે સમય થયો છે અભ્યાસ કરવાનો. 

સૌથી પહેલાં તમે આ વ્યક્તિની સમસ્યા સાંભળો: 

I have a really bad headache.

પ્રેઝન્ટર
OK, તો 'headache' એટલે માથાનો દુઃખાવો. હવે તમે આ વ્યક્તિને સલાહ આપો કે કોઈ દવા લઈ લો. અંગ્રેજીમાં કહશો ‘take some medicine’. શું તમે ‘take medicines’ સાથે ક્રિયાપદ 'should' નો ઉપયોગ કરી શકો છો? જવાબ જાણવા સાંભળો...

હવે તમે આ વ્યક્તિની સમસ્યા સાંભળોઃ

I really want to get fit. 

પ્રેઝન્ટર
સરસ. તો 'get fit' એટલે સાજા થવું. Can you suggest they ‘join a gym’ Say 'join a gym' by using 'how about’. Then compare with Sian’s advice and don't forget your  intonation.
