Hello and welcome! We have a fun topic for the audience today, don't we?

Yes. ఇవాళ మనం celebrations గురించి మాట్లాడుకోబోతున్నాం.  వేడుకల గురించి ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో ఎలా చెప్పాలో తెలుసుకుందాం. జేమ్స్, ఫిల్ ఏవో గురించి మాట్లాడుకుంటున్నారు. విందాం రండి.  మీకు పూర్తిగా అర్థం కాకపోయినా కంగారుపడకండి. నేను మీకు సహాయం చేస్తాను. వాళ్లేదో పెద్ద వేడుక గురించే మాట్లాడుకుంటున్నారు. విందామా?

Hi James! Happy New Year! How was your New Year's? 

James 
It was great, thanks! We went to a big party. It was really fun. How about you? What was your New Year's like? 

Phil 
It was really quiet but it was nice. 

సౌమ్య 
విన్నారా? వాళ్లు కొత్త సంవత్సరం వేడుకల గురించి మాట్లాడుకుంటున్నారు. 

Sam 
And they asked each other some useful questions we can use to ask about lots of things. So let's have a look at those together.

సౌమ్య 
అవును. ఇద్దరూ ఇద్దరినీ న్యూ ఇయర్ వేడుకలు ఎలా జరిగాయి? అనే అడిగారు. కానీ ఇద్దరూ రెండు రకాలుగా అడిగారు. మళ్లీ విందాం.

How was your New Year's?

What was your New Year's like? 

సౌమ్య 
ఫిల్ 'How was your New Year's?', అని అడిగాడు. ఇందులో New Year అనేది వాక్యం చివర్లో వచ్చింది. 

Sam 
And then 'What was your New Year's like?', where 'your New Year's' goes before 'like'. Can you quickly explain 'like' here?

సౌమ్య 
Yes. ఇక్కడ 'What was your New Year's like?' అని అడిగినప్పుడు like అంటే ఇష్టం అని కాదు. మనం తెలుగులో వంటిది, వలే, పోలిన అని వాడతాం కదా దానికి ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో ‘like’ అంటారు. సమానమైనది, సదృశమైనది అని అర్థం.  మీ న్యూ ఇయర్ ఎలా జరిగింది? దేనివలె జరిగింది? అని అడుగుతున్నారు.

Exactly! And you can use these questions to ask about many things – a birthday, a party, a wedding… Shall we practise the pronunciation? Please repeat after me:

‘How was your birthday?’

‘What was your birthday like?’

‘How was the party?’

‘What was the party like?’

Well done!
And you can use ‘your’ or ‘the’ after ‘was’ depending on what you’re talking about.
Now let's look at different ways you can answer these questions.

Yes! జవాబులు ఎలా చెప్పారో ఒకసారి పరిశీలిద్దాం.

It was great, thanks!
It was really fun. 
It was really quiet but it was nice. 

సౌమ్య
గమనించారా వాళ్లు ప్రతీసారీ 'it was…' అనే మొదలెట్టారు. తరువాత విశేషణం వాడారు. 'great', 'fun', 'quiet' and 'nice' ఇవన్నీ వాడారు. ఇవే కాకుండా ఎలాంటి విశేషణాలైనా వాడొచ్చు. Positive or negative.. ఏదైనా వాడొచ్చు.

And we say 'it' and 'was' quite quickly, so it sounds like 'Itwaz'. Let's practise that - repeat after me:

‘It was great, thanks!’

‘It was really fun!’

‘It was really quiet.’

‘….but it was nice.’

Great! ఇప్పుడు పరీక్షా సమయం. మీరెంత బాగా నేర్చుకున్నారో చూద్దాం! మీ ఫ్రెండ్‌ని తన పుట్టినరోజు తరువాత మీరు కలిసారు. Birthday party ఎలా జరిగింది? అని అడగాలి. ప్రయత్నించండి. తరువాత Sam కూడా జవాబు చెప్తారు. విని, మీ జవాబు సరిచూసుకోండి.

సౌమ్య
Well done! ఇప్పుడు అదే ప్రశ్న మరో విధంగా అడగాలి. ఇందాక మనం రెండు విధాలుగా ఎలా అడగవచ్చో నేర్చుకున్నాం కదా. అందులో రెండో పద్ధతి పాటించాలి. 'What', 'like'  ఈ రెండు పదాలు వాడాలి. Try చెయ్యండి.

What was your birthday party like? 

సౌమ్య
Good! ప్రశ్నలడగడం వచ్చేసిందిగా! ఇప్పుడు జవాబులు ఎలా చెప్తారో చూద్దాం. ఈ ప్రశ్న విని, జవాబు చెప్పండి.

What was your weekend like? 

Sam
Mine was really nice! I hope yours was, too!
