ఒక్కోసారి మనం కొన్న వస్తువులను వెనక్కి తిరిగి ఇచ్చేయాల్సి వస్తుంది. కొనుక్కున్నాక మనకి నప్పకో, సరిపోకో, మనం అనుకున్నట్టు లేకపోతే తిరిగి ఇచ్చేసి మన డబ్బులు మనం తెచ్చేసుకోవాలనుకుంటాం, కదా! ఇలా రిటర్న్ ఇవ్వడానికి ఎలాంటి భాష కావాలో ఇవాళ చూద్దాం.

Only if there’s something wrong with it.  సరే, ఈ కస్టమర్ తను కొనుక్కున వస్తువును వెనక్కి తిరిగి ఇచ్చేస్తున్నారు. ఈ సంభాషణ ఎలా సాగుతోందో జాగ్రత్తగా పరిశీలించండి.

ఒహ్హో డబ్బు వాపస్ ఇవ్వరట! బదులుగా వేరే ఏదైనా వస్తువు తీసుకోమని చెప్పారు. లేదంటే store credit’ తీసుకోమన్నారు. అంటే ఆ డబ్బులు షాప్ వాళ్ల దగ్గరే ఉంటాయి. మళ్లీ తరువాతెప్పుడైనా వచ్చి ఆ డబ్బులకు సరిపడా మనకు కావలసిన వస్తువు తీసుకోవచ్చు. Refund - డబ్బు వాపస్ ఇవ్వడం. Exchange – మారకం. మొదటి భాగం మళ్లీ విందాం. వస్తువును వెనక్కి తిరిగి ఇచ్చేయొచ్చా? అని ఎలా అడిగారు.

వస్తువు ‘return’ ఇచ్చేస్తాను అని అంటే ‘receipt’ ఉందా? అని అడిగారు.

‘Please can I’ is a polite request, and it’s appropriate to use here. We follow this with other verbs as well - ‘Please can I show you this’ or ‘Please can I speak to someone about this.' 

Let's look at intonation – we usually use a rising, then falling intonation. - it falls on ‘this’ . Repeat after me: 

‘Please can I return this?’

‘Please can I return this?’

‘Refund’ అడిగితే కుదరదు, ‘exchange’ చేసుకోవచ్చు లేదా ‘store credit’ తీసుకోండి అన్నారు.

Yes and here we have another way of asking for something politely ‘Can I get a refund please’. We can use this to ask for anything.
Here we have a rising intonation on the ‘please’. Listen and repeat:

‘Can I get a refund, please?’

‘Can I get a refund please?’

ఇంతకీ ఎందుకు రిటర్న్ ఇవ్వాలనుకుంటున్నారు?

సైజ్ సరిపోలేదు ‘wrong size’ అని చెప్పారు.

We use ‘wrong’ to say that the problem was with the size. But we could use this to talk about any other aspect – so for example something could be the ‘wrong colour’. 

సౌమ్య 
‘Wrong’ అని మనకు నప్పని వాటి గురించి చెప్పడానికి వాడొచ్చు. ‘Wrong colour’ అంటే మనం అనుకున్న రంగు కాదు. వేరేది అని అర్థం. సరే, ఇప్పటివరకు చెప్పుకున్నవన్నీ మీకెంతవరకు గుర్తున్నాయో చూద్దాం. వస్తువు కొనుక్కున్నాక వెనక్కి తిరిగి ఇచ్చేయాలంటే ఏమని అడగాలి?
