United States expresses concern over Gmail access in China

The United States government has expressed concern over China's apparent blocking of access to Google's popular e-mail service.

The state department spokesman Jeffrey Rathke said censorship of the media was incompatible with China's aspirations to build an information-based economy and society.

China's foreign ministry denied any knowledge of G-mail being blocked.

Data from the internet giant shows that online traffic from China to G-mail dropped off enormously on Friday and has yet to return to normal.

Actress Luise Rainer dies aged 104

The first actress to win Oscars in consecutive years, Luise Rainer, has died in London, aged one-hundred-and-four.

Born in Vienna, she lived much of her life in England. Rainer took Best Actress for "The Great Ziegfeld'' in 1936 followed by "The Good Earth'' in 1937.

Luise Rainer once said the double victory was the worst thing that could have happened because her studio thought they could then manipulate her career however they wished.
