Colour or black and white?

In the past, technology meant that photographs were black and white. Many people still choose to work in black and white because it can produce different effects to colour photography.

Black and white images tend to show pattern, texture, shape and form more clearly and to draw attention to lighting. Experimenting with black and white photography can be a useful way of concentrating on composition.

On a digital camera, working in colour or black and white can be changed in the settings.

On a film camera, this is determined by the kind of film you use.

Digital photographs can be manipulated to make them black and white after they have been taken.
