Composition

Composition is just as important in photography as with any other art or design. Make sure you have an awareness of the art elements, such as line, shape and the balance within the image.

Viewpoint

It's important to experiment with different angles and viewpoints when taking photographs:

  • How close to or far away from your subject can change how much of the frame it fills, how its scale compares to its surroundings and how flat or deep the image will appear.
  • A high angle can make your subject appear smaller and more insignificant or vulnerable
  • A low angle can make your subject appear larger, more powerful and imposing

Leading lines

are a useful compositional tool.

A viewer's eyes tend to look for lines and follow them from one end to the other. The effect is particularly strong when different lines come together.

Look for straight lines and curves in your subject. Try using these to key parts of your image and to help create a sense of depth and space.
