Remember that nicht comes before all of the following:

• adjectives
• prepositions
• adverbs

Adjectives

Place nicht before an adjective and its intensifier:

• ich bin fertig – I am ready
• ich bin nicht fertig – I am not ready
• ich bin sehr müde – I am very tired
• ich bin nicht sehr müde – I am not very tired
• sie ist krank gewesen – she has been ill
• sie ist nicht krank gewesen – she has not been ill

Prepositions and prepositional phrases

Place nicht before prepositions and prepositional phrases:

• er kommt aus Bamberg – he comes from Bamberg
• er kommt nicht aus Bamberg – he does not come from Bamberg
• wir wohnen in der Stadt – we live in town
• wir wohnen nicht in der Stadt – we do not live in town

Adverbs and adverbial phrases

Normally nicht is also placed before adverbs or adverbial phrases, eg:

• er spielt gut Fußball – he plays football well
• er spielt nicht gut Fußball – he does not play football well (gut - adverb of manner)
• ich möchte hier bleiben – I would like to stay here
• ich möchte nicht hier bleiben – I would not like to stay here (hier - adverb of place)

However, nicht normally follows adverbial phrases of time, like gestern, heute, morgen, früher, später, eg:

• ich gehe heute einkaufen – I'm going shopping today
• ich gehe heute nicht einkaufen – I'm not going shopping today
• sie ist oft dorthin gegangen – she went there often
• sie ist nicht oft dorthin gegangen – she did not often go there
• ich werde früh aufstehen – I will get up early
• ich werde nicht früh aufstehen – I will not get up early
