In the perfect tense, nicht usually comes before the past participle if there is no other element in the sentence.

• er hat das Buch gekauft – he bought the book > er hat das Buch nicht gekauft – he did not buy the book
• er hat seine Freunde getroffen – he met his friends > er hat seine Freunde nicht getroffen – he did not meet his friends

This also applies to reflexive verbs in the perfect tense:

• wir haben uns hingesetzt – we sat down > wir haben uns nicht hingesetzt – we did not sit down
