When you learn to speak and write a new language you must be able to provide information. From describing yourself to discussing special occasions, it's useful to discuss the past and the future.

Listen to the following clip that suggests how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Before doing so, look at these words:

  • braster isel – low fat
  • bara cyflawn – wholemeal bread
  • digon o – plenty of
  • mwynau – minerals

Did you notice these key expressions?

  • Dylet ti… (+ soft mutation) – You should…
  • Gallet ti… (+ soft mutation) – You could…
  • Ddylet ti ddim… – You shouldn’t…
  • Paid… – Don’t

What advice would you give someone who wants to lead a healthy lifestyle? Use the above patterns with the following expressions and give some sound advice about healthy living.

Why do people drink alcohol, take drugs and smoke?

Here are some suggestions:

  • er mwyn ymlacio – in order to relax
  • er mwyn cael hwyl – in order to have fun
  • er mwyn anghofio problemau – in order to forget problems
  • er mwyn bod yn cŵl – in order to be cool
  • er mwyn dilyn ffrindiau – in order to follow friends
  • er mwyn cael amser da – in order to have a good time

What are the dangers associated with taking drugs, smoking or drinking alcohol? Here are some suggestions:

Mae ysmygu yn gallu achosi… – Smoking can cause…

  • canser yr ysgyfaint – lung cancer
  • dannedd melyn – yellow teeth
  • bysedd melyn – yellow fingers
  • peswch drwg – a bad cough

Mae cyffuriau ac alcohol yn beryglus achos… – Drugs and alcohol are dangerous because...

  • mae cyffuriau'n gaethiwus – drugs are addictive
  • mae cyffuriau'n gallu newid personoliaeth person – drugs can change a person's personality
  • mae yfed gormod o alcohol yn gallu achosi canser yr iau/afu – drinking too much alcohol can cause liver cancer

If you wanted to say people shouldn't, you should use this expression:

Ddylai pobl ddim… – People shouldn't…, eg:

Yn fy marn i, mae pobl ifanc yn ysmygu er mwyn dilyn ffrindiau. Ddylai pobl ifanc ddim ysmygu achos mae'n gallu achosi canser yr ysgyfaint.

Prepare a list of things that people shouldn't do if they want to be healthy, eg:

  • Ddylai pobl ddim dilyn ffrindiau. – People shouldn't follow friends.
  • Ddylen nhw ddim er mwyn ymlacio. – They shouldn't take drugs in order to relax.

Exercise

Write an extended piece of writing about keeping healthy and fit. Try to include the following points:

  • why people drink alcohol, smoke or take drugs
  • the dangers
  • why you/people shouldn’t drink alcohol, smoke or take drugs
  • what you/people should do to live a healthy lifestyle. Remember to write about diet and exercise here.
