You will encounter a variety of question types:

• 'identify'/'state'/'name' questions require a short answer
• 'write' questions require you to complete something, e.g. an equation
• 'describe' questions require answers containing characteristics or features of chemicals/concepts
• evaluating experiments – this examines your ability to evaluate the design of an experiment
• 'explain' questions require a description of cause and effect or relationships.
  • 'explain fully' questions are 2 or 3 mark questions
  • 3 mark questions generally give you more information to work with
  • a specific answer is required, so try to write a point for each mark.
• 'compare' questions are looking for similarities/differences.
• 'complete' questions require the completion of a table or equation.
• 'determine/'calculate' questions require a numerical answer.
• 'draw' questions require you to draw or complete a diagram.
• 'estimate' questions require an approximate value.
• 'predict' questions require you to make a suggestion based on knowledge.
• 'evaluate' questions require you to make a judgement based on knowledge.
• 'suggest' questions require you to apply your knowledge to a new situation.
• 'using your knowledge of chemistry' questions require you to show your understanding of chemical concepts and how they are related
