Dates

As a general rule if a date is between the first and 19th of the month, you add the ending -ten to the number, eg:

  • zwei > zweiten (two > second)
  • fünf > fünften (five > fifth)

If the number is between the 20th and the 31st, you add the ending -sten, eg:

  • fünfundzwanzig > fünfundzwanzigsten (25 > 25th)
  • einunddreißig > einunddreißigsten (31 > 31st)

There are of course some exceptions:

ersten– first

dritten– third

siebten– seventh

Did you know?

Christmas is a widely celebrated festival in the German-speaking countries and children open their presents on 24th December – Heiligabend. The day that follows – der erste Weihnachtstag – is what we call Christmas Day and der zweite Weihnachtstag is the equivalent of Boxing Day.

At the end of the year Silvester is a night of great celebration before Neujahr starts the next morning. Am 6. Januar many families also celebrate der Tag der Heiligen Drei Königen (literally: the day of the three holy kings), which is known as 'Epiphany' in English.

Another important date in the German calendar is der Tag der deutschen Einheit. Celebrated on 3 October – am 3. Oktober – it marks the unification between the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik – the former East Germany) and the BRD (Bundesrepublik Deutschland – West Germany).

The 3 October is an annual bank holiday in Germany.
