Pride and Prejudice focuses on the evolving relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth is the intelligent and outspoken second-born and Darcy is a rich landowner.

Who are the Bennet sisters?

As mentioned, Pride and Prejudice introduces us to the Bennet family. But who are the Bennet sisters in the famous novel?
The eldest of the Bennet sisters is the patient and generous Jane. In the novel, Mrs Bennet is keen for her eldest to get married to secure the family’s future.
The second eldest Bennet sister is Elizabeth, known as Lizzy, who is the heroine of the novel. The story is mainly told from her perspective and focuses on her relationship with Mr Darcy.

Who wrote Pride and Prejudice and when is it set?

One of the most famous books in classic literature, Pride and Prejudice was written by author Jane Austen and first published in 1813. Born in Hampshire in 1775, Austen wrote classics that focused on middle class society and strong female characters.
The renowned English novelist published four books anonymously - Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma. After her death in 1817, the author’s identity was revealed.
Austen's other novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1817. Austen was buried in Winchester Cathedral and today, there is a permanent exhibition and museum, The Jane Austen Centre, located in Bath.

What are the key themes in Pride and Prejudice?

Studied through the generations, Pride and Prejudice has several key themes throughout. Here, BBC Bitesize references just a few of them.
Austen explores the theme of love through various relationships, such as marriage, sisterhood and friendship. The plot surrounds the potential relationships and marriages of the Bennet sisters, in a time when marriage was more about securing wealth than romance.
Another key theme is status in Regency society. The novel explores hierarchy, reputation and the gender roles of the time. The female characters face societal pressures, like the economic benefits of marriage and maintaining a flawless reputation.

Others have been inspired to write modern retellings loosely based on Austen's 1813 novel.
Pride and Prejudice has also come to our screens in various film and television adaptations. There are so many to name, but here are a few famous examples you may have already heard of.
In television, the first adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is believed to be the 1938 BBC series. According to the BBC, the expensive production did not survive the archives as television was then in its infancy.

Martin Henderson plays William Darcy, a take on Fitzwilliam Darcy.
And while it isn't a direct adaptation of the Jane Austen classic, 2001 film Bridget Jones's Diary was heavily inspired by Pride and Prejudice. Based on the 1996 novel by Helen Fielding, the author was inspired after watching the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
