Who said it: Austen or Swift?

Part ofBitesize Topical

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that someone looking to pass a bit of time, must be in want of a quiz.

The renowned late 18th-Century English novelist Jane Austen wrote timeless classics, like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility.

Jane Austen’s young heroines tended to be strong, witty characters who spoke their own mind, not unlike global superstar and singer-songwriter Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift might not have written a novel (yet), but her song lyrics certainly tell their own stories, and are avidly studied by fans for any hidden meanings.

Romance is a major theme in both of these women’s work, so let’s see if you can guess which quote comes from the work of which artist.

  • BBC Arts is marking Austen’s 250th birthday with a series Jane Austen: Rise of a Genius – showing how she changed literature and fought against the conventions of 18th Century England.

You can also find film adaptations of Jane Austen's novels plus a documentary looking at how different homes influenced her work in the iPlayer Austen Collection
