Let's start off with the BBC Berkshire newsroom. This is where the radio reporters write up their news stories. These are gathered from the news wires, local contacts and from the Berkshire district reporters. This room is also where reporters create radio clips and features using a computer editing programme. As you can see from the photo the newsroom looks much like an office. Through the window at the back is one of the studios.

The above image and video clip shows presenter Andrew Peach in action. The studio is one of two in the building and features a mixer - that basically controls the audio such as microphone and music levels.
The presenter inserts jingles and audio clips in his show using a computer programme. The running order of the show is also controlled via this programme. The clip also shows where the show's guests sit. | Click on the image for a virtual tour of the phone-in room. |
The above image and video clip shows the 'phone-in' room. This is the control centre for each radio show and is where the producer and broadcast assistant (BA) sit. This room is next door to the studio and has a connecting window so that the producer can see the presenter. The producer plans and controls the content of the show, from the daily discussion topic and arranging the guests to script-writing and technical production.
The BA supports the presenter and producer and can do a range of duties including taking calls from listeners who wish to go on air, editing audio clips and researching content for the show. | Click on the image to see the news bulletin being read in the inject studio. |
The last image and video clip is of the 'inject' studio, here with BBC Berkshire's technical engineer Martyn Strong. This is a small studio mainly used for the live news bulletins. It is also used for recording interviews on an ISDN line (a high quality digital telephone line) and editing radio features. |
