Antony Gormley

Antony Gormley studied archaeology, anthropology and art history at Trinity College, Cambridge from 1968-71. He then studied Buddhism in India (1971-4) before returning to England to study sculpture at the Slade.
He is best known for the lead figures he cast from his own body and also for his 20m high sculpture, Angel of the North, situated next to the A1 in Gateshead.
Gormley won the Turner Prize in 1994 for Field. The series of installations continue to be made in collaboration with different communities, the latest at the Sydney Biennial in 2006. Thousands of hand sized clay figures are produced for each version, the shape of each determined by its maker.
