Council accused of schools 'sham'

Aberdeen protest
There have already been protests against the closure plans

Aberdeen City Council's administration has been accused of carrying out a "sham" consultation over controversial plans to close or merge schools.

A draft report reveals officials are recommending the plans go ahead, but campaigners have vowed to fight on.

Labour group secretary Willie Young has criticised the consultation, saying a decision had already been made.

Council education spokesperson Kirsty West said it was irresponsible to comment on a draft report so early.

The authority announced it was consulting on the future of several schools earlier this year.

It said falling rolls meant spending money on building maintenance could not be justified.

Parents react to the council report

Aberdeen City Council has said it wants to spend money educating pupils instead of maintaining ageing buildings.

Pupils and parents have held protest marches, and St Machar Primary, Pupil and Parent Council has arranged another protest walk around Tillydrone on Friday.

A group spokesperson said: "The consultation period may be over but our fight continues."
