Parents campaign over merger plan
Protest
Parents have been protesting at the school gates of the school
Parents have formed a campaign group to fight for the future of their local primary school in Aberdeen.

Victoria Road School in Torry is one of three which could close under plans being considered by councillors.

Parents and grandparents of pupils at the school have started staging protests to raise public awareness.

Aberdeen City Council said it needed to make changes because of a surplus of school places, but local people said Torry was a growing area.

More pupils

A large number of Eastern Europeans who have moved to the city are choosing to live in Torry.

Parents have already staged protests at the gates of the school.

Mother Emma Adams said: "My youngest one, she's been standing here crying because she doesn't want the school to close.

"She's going into primary one and she doesn't want to move to a new school and have to find new friends and integrate there."

Torry is a regeneration zone... It would be very short sighted to close this school down.
Cllr Alan Donnelly

The proposals also include plans to merge up to 12 schools in Aberdeen.

The issue will be considered by councillors at a meeting on Friday.

The council's education spokeswoman, councillor Kirsty West, told the BBC Scotland news website: "The population of the schoolchildren in Aberdeen is actually decreasing. We have capacity within our schools for 30,000 pupils.

"We only have 22,500 pupils currently so we're obviously not getting the money from the Scottish Government for these pupils.

"We're having to keep buildings open that are, in some cases, half empty."

But local councillor Alan Donnelly, who is backing the parents, believes the wrong schools are being targeted.

He said: "Torry is a regeneration zone. The council are spending millions of pounds building affordable housing here.

"We've got a large Polish community with 50 to 60 children coming in. It's increasing all the time and it would be very short-sighted to close this school down."
