Primary closures plan discussed
Protest
There have been protests against the closure plans
Plans to close or merge several Aberdeen primary schools have been discussed by councillors.

No decision will be taken without further consultation, but the proposals are proving controversial with parents in the affected communities.

Four city primaries - Victoria Road, Causewayend, Kittybrewster and Stoneywood - have been recommended for possible closure.

Others with a school roll well below capacity could merge.

In an unusual move, all councillors were invited to attend the committee meeting and take part in the debate on Friday. The issue will go to a full council meeting next week.

New figures

The council says it must invest more in education and less in the maintenance of property.

In Torry, parents at Victoria Road have formed a campaign group to fight the plans.

At Causewayend, the head teacher has written to the council pointing out that more than half of her pupils live outside the area, with many parents choosing the school as it is convenient for their work in the city centre.

Meanwhile, new figures show that the cost of educating children in Aberdeen is above the Scottish average. The figure of almost 5,000 per pupil is higher than Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee.
