Jockeys shave heads for charity

Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson
The fund-raiser was in memory of Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson

Sixteen jockeys have shaved their heads at a race meeting in Doncaster to raise money for a fund set up in memory of two apprentice riders killed in a fire.

Jamie Kyne, 18, and Jan Wilson, 19, died in a fire at flats in Norton, North Yorkshire, on 5 September.

The fund-raiser, held at the final British Flat season meeting of 2009, was attended by the victim's families.

The apprentice jockey's championship, named in honour of Mr Kyne and Miss Wilson, was won by Fredrick Tylicki.

Mr Tylicki, a close friend of Mr Kyne, was among those who shaved their heads for The Malton Fire Disaster Appeal charity.

The fund was set up by the Jockey Club's charity, Racing Welfare. It aims to help the family, friends and former housemates of Mr Kyne and Miss Wilson.

In October jockey Ryan Moore donated more than £3,000 of his prize money after being crowned 2009 Champion Flat Jockey.

Following the fund-raiser at Doncaster Racecourse donations to the appeal have now topped £100,000.
