A fund set up in the memory of two teenage jockeys who died in an apparent arson attack in North Yorkshire has raised £39,000.

Former champion jockey Lester Piggott was among those who had made donations to The Malton Disaster Appeal Fund, the charity Racing Welfare said.

Jamie Kyne, 18, from Galway, and Jan Wilson, 19, from Forfar, died in a fire at flats in Norton on 5 September.

Police have urged anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.

Richard Negus, from Racing Welfare, said bookmakers and two other former champion jockeys had also contributed to the fund.

Mr Negus said the charity was meeting representatives from the racing world, jockeys, trainers and Mr Kyne and Miss Wilson's families, to discuss a permanent tribute to them.

He added that the money could be used to improve accommodation for young jockeys.

There were thought to be six people in the flats in Buckrose Court when the fire broke out.

Earlier the jockeys had been celebrating after receiving their "pool money" from a local trainer, witnesses said.

Apprentice jockeys Mr Kyne and Miss Wilson were on the second floor.

Their friend and fellow apprentice, Ian Brennan, was also in the second-floor flat and jumped to safety when the fire spread through the building.

North Yorkshire Police have released CCTV images of four people who may be witnesses.

A funeral service for Mr Kyne will be held in Malton on Thursday. Miss Wilson's funeral is expected to take place in Scotland next week.

People can send donations to Racing Welfare, 5b Commercial Street, Norton, North Yorkshire, or can telephone 01638 560 763.
