Two people were filmed on CCTV in Church Street at 0205 BST |
Police investigating a suspected arson attack in North Yorkshire in which two jockeys died have released CCTV images of four people who may be witnesses. Jamie Kyne, 18, from the Irish Republic, and Jan Wilson, 19, from Forfar, Scotland, died at the flats in Norton, in the early hours of Saturday. Police have urged anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward. They said it was "vital" the people in the two CCTV images came forward, even if they had not witnessed the fire. The first picture shows two people, at 0205 BST last Saturday, walking along Church Street in the direction of the scene of the fire. 'Crucial time' The second image, taken at about 0217 BST, shows another two people walking on the other side of the same road, past a filling station, and also heading towards the scene. Det Supt Alan Carey, who is leading the investigation into the fire, said: "It is vital that these four people come forward to speak to officers. "They were in the area of the fire at a crucial time, either just before it broke out or as it was happening. "Even if they didn't see anything, we still need to speak to them as they could help piece together the tragic events of Saturday morning. Two other people were filmed on the other side of the road minutes later |
"I cannot stress enough the importance of needing to speak to these people and appeal to them or anyone who may know who they are, to please come forward and contact police." There were thought to be six people in the flats in Buckrose Court when the fire broke out. Earlier the jockeys had been celebrating after receiving their "pool money" from a local trainer, witnesses said. Apprentice jockeys Mr Kyne and Miss Wilson were on the second floor. Their friend and fellow apprentice, Ian Brennan, was also in the second-floor flat and jumped to safety when the fire spread through the building. The 20-year-old was released from hospital and went on to ride at Thirsk on Saturday. A fourth person in the block, Irish apprentice jockey Dean Pratt, was also taken to York District Hospital and treated for burns and smoke inhalation. A man in his 30s who was arrested by North Yorkshire Police in connection with the blaze remains on police bail. Police are now waiting for the results of a forensic examination of the scene.
