Elite figures from horse racing have paid tribute to two teenage jockeys who died in an apparent arson attack.

Jamie Kyne, 18, and Jan Wilson, 19, were killed in a fire at a three-storey block of flats in Norton, near Malton, North Yorkshire, early on Saturday.

Flowers from former champion jockey Kieren Fallon were among the tributes at the entrance to the flats on Monday.

Mr Fallon's bouquet said: "You will be missed everyday. RIP. With love Kirsty and Kieren Fallon."

The 44-year-old jockey won three races at Folkestone on Monday after returning to the sport last week following a drugs ban.

'Witty banter'

Mr Kyne's trainer John Quinn described him as "a great little lad and a very good young rider".

Another message described him as a "gent of racing" and one said they would miss his "cheeky smile and witty banter".

These tributes were placed alongside more than a dozen others just yards from where the blaze broke out.

Police recovered the teenagers' bodies from the second floor of the building on Sunday.

A man in his 30s who was arrested in connection with the fire has been released on bail, North Yorkshire Police said.

The forensic examination of the flats at Buckrose Court is expected to take up to three days, police said.

Post-mortem examinations were due to be carried out on Monday morning.

Mr Kyne, from Galway in the Irish Republic, and Miss Wilson, from Forfar in Angus, were at a party when the fire broke out.

Their friend and fellow apprentice, Ian Brennan, was also in the second-floor flat and jumped to safety after the fire started at 0215 BST.

The 20-year-old was released from hospital and went on to ride at Thirsk on Saturday.

Half mast

A fourth person in the block, Irish apprentice jockey Dean Pratt, was also taken to York District Hospital and treated for burns and the effects of smoke inhalation.

Mr Kyne had ridden 29 winners so far this year, the most recent at Beverley on 30 August. He had been due to ride at Haydock on Saturday.

Miss Wilson had three wins to her name, the last at Ayr four weeks ago.

Periods of silence were observed at several racecourses over the weekend, including York, where flags flew at half mast.

Mr Kyne was apprentice to Malton-based trainer John Quinn.

Mr Quinn said: "It is devastating for their families, everyone in the stable and for the whole of Norton and Malton. It was a terrible thing to have happened.

"Jamie had been with us for about 18 months. He had a good career ahead of him, it is still hard to believe what has happened."
